While using a lavatory
on campus at the University of Michigan, Jamie Schenk, producer, director
and writer of Urban Scrawls became intrigued by the writings on the wall.
So much so, she was inspired to create a documentary about bathroom graffiti.
Her belief in the project encouraged others to join her crusade in answering
the perpetual question, "who would write/draw something like that in
the bathroom?"
Schenk was joined by producer, Sarah Wagner Cantu, a freelancer in the film
and video industry for nearly a decade and cinematographer Kim C. Simms, of
"Where the Buffalo Roam" and "Last Big Attraction"
The three women combined their talents, resources and favors to complete a ten-day shoot in three major metropolitan cities in the Midwest. For weeks, the trio traversed between Chicago, Detroit and Minneapolis. They scouted out locations in bars, restaurants and discovered some sites, literally, by accident. Filming any documentary is never easy, imagine the set up for Urban Scrawls. Conditions, to say the least, were not always the cleanest or easily accessible for a crew of ten plus equipment. But they never had to stand in line.
Urban Scrawls was edited and finished in Chicago by Michael Palmerio of Bulletproof Editing. Palmerio has been involved with a number of high-profile indie projects including the notable 1998 Slamdance documentary winner, "Amerikan Passport".|
